‘Another important step’…’4-5 innings, 65 pitches’ Ryu Hyun-jin to be tested in full swing

“Hyun-jin Ryu (36-Toronto Blue Jays) will pitch tomorrow (16) at Triple-A. This is another important step in his recovery from Tommy John surgery (elbow ligament reconstruction).”

Ryu will make his third rehab start of the season. He pitched three innings of four-hit ball with five strikeouts and one run on 42 pitches in the Rookie League on 5 May and four innings of three-hit ball with one strikeout and no runs in Single-A on 10 May.
Ryu will get his first real test at Triple-A. This is because Triple-A is the highest level of the minor leagues, just before the major leagues. There are a number of hitters who have played in the major leagues, so he’ll be able to see if his pitches and body are ready for the big leagues.
According to Toronto reporter Ben Nicholson-Smith, “Ryu is expected to go four or five innings and throw around 65 pitches in his start.” If you do the maths, that’s around 13-16 pitches per inning, so it will be interesting to see how efficiently he pitches. Because Ryu is a starter, he needs to manage his pitches economically in order to go a lot of innings.
The ability to throw as many innings as a starter at this stage of his career means that Ryu is really being tested. Keegan Matheson, who covers Toronto for MLB.com, the official website of Major League Baseball, explained the importance of the rehab start a day later, saying, “(The third rehab start) is another important step in Ryu’s return from Tommy John surgery (elbow ligament reconstruction).”
Meanwhile, Toronto general manager Ross Atkins recently spoke about the timing of Ryu’s big league call-up, saying, “He’ll be called up when he’s able to throw 80 to 100 pitches. It is likely that he will make a few more live appearances with the goal of increasing his pitch count to some degree to ensure that he has the minimum number of innings as a starter. “If all goes well, he could make one or two more starts in Triple-A,” Maderson said of Ryu’s future plans.
If all goes according to plan, Ryu will be back in the big leagues later this month.
