Australian Minor Leaguer’s Confidence toward Koh Young-pyo, “The slugging power is excellent from 1st to 9th” [Oh!Ssen Tokyo]

Korea will play the first game of Group B 안전놀이터 in the first round of the 2023 World Baseball Classic (WBC) against Australia at the Tokyo Dome in Japan on the 9th. Koh Young-pyo will be the starting pitcher.

Australia’s Robbie Granding, who is facing Korea, cited the batting line as Australia’s strength in an interview before the match. 

Granding is a 2017 Pittsburgh Draft infielder. He played in Texas Minor League Double-A last year. In 118 games last year, he had a batting average of 2.5, 2 runs, 19 home runs, 76 RBIs, and an OPS of .812.

Ahead of the game in Korea, Granding said, “I’m very excited. Considering my journey so far, I’m happy to have today’s opening match. I’ll go out on the pitch and do everything I can.” 

When asked about Australia’s strengths, he said, “This is the lineup. We have excellent scoring ability. From 1st to 9th, we have excellent hitting power. We have been practicing for a long time as a team. I think the batting is very powerful.”

The Australian national team also has pitcher Saupold who played in the KBO League. Questions continued about how much he studied Korean players. 

He said, “I know the Korean KBO league is a great league. I understand how great a team Korea is through scouting reports. I think it will be a good game today.” 

Granding said, “When I was a kid, I kept watching the WBC tournament. I remember it. What impressed me was the match against Mexico when I was young. My childhood memory made me who I am today. I’m very proud to be able to play for Australia. do,” he said.
