Incheon High School, coached by Gye Ki-beom, lost 11-10 in the final against Gunsan Sangil High School in the 57th Presidential Baseball Tournament at the Mokdong Baseball Stadium in Seoul on Thursday.

Earlier, Incheon had to settle for runners-up for the second time since 1985 and the first time in 19 years since 2004.

Ace Kim Taek-yeon pitched 7⅓ innings in the semi-final against Kyungpook National University on the 12th, allowing one run on four hits with one walk and nine strikeouts, but was unable to pitch in the final as he threw 105 pitches.

Incheon opened the scoring in the top of the first inning when Kim Ji-seok, batting fifth, singled to put runners on first and second. Kim Jun-won followed with a two-run double to make it 3-1 at the end of the first inning.

Riding on the momentum, Han Kyu-hyuk hit a bases-loaded triple in the top of the third inning and Lim Kyu-young singled to bring home Han Kyu-hyuk from third base to make it 4-1.

However, Incheon went into a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the third inning without their star pitcher Kim Taek-yeon, cutting the lead to 4-3. In the end, Gunsan Sangilgo scored 5-4 in the bottom of the fifth inning, and a fierce battle ensued between the two high schools.

At the end of the sixth inning, with the bases loaded, a defensive error allowed Gunsan Sangil High School to score four runs, giving them a 9-5 lead. However, even in this situation, the players did not give up.

In the top of the eighth inning, Park Jae-hyun singled, Lee Jae-hyo singled, stole second base, and scored on a wild pitch to tie the game at 10-10. However, in the bottom of the ninth, Park Chan-woo of Gunsan Sang-Il-Go hit the game-winning hit. Although the team finished as runners-up, it was definitely a great achievement.

At the awards ceremony, Incheon’s Kim Taek-yeon was honoured as the Most Valuable Player, while Lim Kyu-young won the Most RBI and Most Hits awards.
