Japan lost 69-76 in the first game of the KB Home Bank 2023 Men’s Basketball National Team Trial against the Republic of Korea at Jamsil Student Gymnasium on 22 February.

Japan had no answer for Korea’s “real man” Heo Hoon. He finished with 22 points, including three three-pointers, three rebounds, six assists and one steal, outplaying Japan’s standout Yuki Togashi (six points).

It was a Korea-Japan game, but it was also a game for Heo Hoon. Head coach Chu Il-seung chose to play only one guard to utilise his long line-up. It was a tactical choice that put a lot of pressure on the guard and was one of Chu’s biggest concerns ahead of the tournament.

With Kim Sun-hyung and Lee Jung-hyun recovering from injuries and withdrawing from the Universiade squad, respectively, there was a huge gap in the frontline. Furthermore, the team utilised a long line-up that put a lot of pressure on the guards.

But with Heo Hoon, anything is possible. Chu trusted him and used the long lineup to his advantage, and Heo didn’t just run the game, he actually broke down the Japanese defence.

In the first quarter, Heo broke down Japan’s defence with a bold move. He drew the opposing big man outside and cooked him like a Gordon Ramsay. He was also the one who broke the flow whenever Japan made a run. Because of this, Japan completely lost the physical battle and seemed to self-destruct in the mental battle. This is where Heo’s presence was so important.

Japan’s head coach Tom Horvath also singled out Heo as his favourite player. “I was most impressed with Hehun. He ran the game very well and was clever. He also did a good job of defending to put us under pressure.”

Hehun’s performance also had a big impact on Japan’s tactical and strategic adjustments. “In the second game, we will use different tactics and strategies from the first game to overcome him,” said Hobas.

Togashi, who was completely overwhelmed by Hehun, said, “Hehun was the most impressive. I don’t know what our tactics and strategy will be in the second game, but the most important thing is how to stop him.”

Aside from Heo, Hobas and Togashi were also wary of “flame shooter” Jeon Sung-hyun. He hadn’t been analysed at all and was getting hit with a series of three-pointers. “He’s a former
