After a disastrous spring in which they were considered ‘favorites’ before the start of the season, with a win-loss margin of -14, the KT Wiz’s summer rebound has put them in a position to threaten the leaders.

With 38 games left in the season, KT, which has been on a frightening spurt since June, has moved into second place with 58 wins, 2 draws, and 46 losses, a winning percentage of 0.558, and a winning/loss margin of +12, closing the gap to LG (64 wins, 2 draws, and 38 losses) with seven games in hand.

Their recent run of 10 consecutive winning series (3 out of 3 or 2-1) has LG scared, but KT is ready to settle into a solid second place rather than try to take the lead. This is because LG has been performing steadily thanks to the stability of its two-hitter, and overdoing it could ruin their fall baseball.

At the beginning of the season, when KT was at the bottom of the standings due to a series of injuries, the club decided that it would be difficult to catch up with the top teams, so they decided to use a lot of second-team players in the remaining games to gain experience. However, after the team started to rebound in June and joined the mid-table race, the goal was revised upward to reach fall baseball.

The return of the injured players and the growth of the backup players made the team’s mindset clear and led to a rapid rise in the rankings. With recent momentum, the top spot is within reach, but KT will likely opt for a steady second half of the season.

KT faces sixth-place KIA at home this week before traveling to Busan to take on seventh-place Lotte on the weekend. Both teams are in desperate need of a fifth-place finish to qualify for the fall baseball season and will likely go all-out in each game, making them tough opponents for KT.

Furthermore, midweek opponent KIA is the only team KT has beaten this season with a 1-6 record, so the team will be looking to capitalize on the opportunity to bounce back in this home three-game series. Compared to the beginning of the season, when there were many injuries, the team has a strong starting mound and bullpen, as well as a batting lineup that is exploding up and down the order.

Lotte, the next team to face off on the weekend, is also in the midst of a three-game losing streak, but they are expected to give it their all to get on the last train for fall baseball. While KT is a strong contender for the fall baseball season, they need to take advantage of this week’s games against teams in the mid-table to solidify a stable second place in the second half of the season, when every game is a slippery slope.
